The photo matters more than the style
Dogs will sit for a camera. Most cats won't, so the picture you choose does most of the work. Take it at the cat's eye level, in daylight from a window rather than a ceiling light or flash – flash flattens the fur and puts a glow in the eyes. Burst mode on a phone gets round the not-sitting-still problem: hold the button and keep the frame where the ears are forward. Black and dark cats need the most light; an afternoon photo by the window keeps the detail in the coat that an evening one loses. Long-haired cats – Persians, Maine Coons, Ragdolls – come out best when the photo already shows the fur in layers rather than flat against the body.

Watercolour and oil painting styles keep the markings and the eyes as they are and add a painted finish. Tabby stripes, tortoiseshell patches and a black cat's green eyes all carry well in these.
Bold and colourful

Common questions
Can I put two cats in one portrait? Yes. Upload a photo with both cats in it and generate the preview – a clear shot of the two together works better than two separate ones.
What size should I choose? Prints come in 8×12, 12×18 and 16×24 inches. A single cat carries the 8×12 well; two cats, or a piece for a living-room wall, need 12×18 or 16×24 so the faces read from across the room.
Do you make portraits of cats who have passed away? Yes, and many of the portraits ordered here are memorials. Any photo you have will do – it doesn't need to be recent or sharp.
